Flax (Linen) Fibers [blends] [stricks] [tops] [back to fibers page] Flax is probably the most well known bast fiber among hand spinners. Do you recall the terms "tow-headed" and "flaxen-haired"? These terms take on a whole new meaning once you have worked with this fiber. Flax can vary from fine almost silky grades to the coarsest tow, from creamy light to tan in color. Flax strick is the full-length fiber, often 1 1/2 to 3 feet long. Flax roving is made from fibers that have been cut into shorter lengths (3 - 4 inches) before carding. Tow is what is combed out of the long finer fibers, and was often used for starting fires and for candle wicks. Flax is stronger when wet. The long smooth flax fibers make for a lint-free fabric that improves with use. It irons and dyes well.
