Schacht has built a lifetime of service into their hand carders. They have a small lip milled into the rear edge of the paddle to protect the card clothing from becoming worn and the handles have been precisely tenoned into the paddles for superior strength.
Schacht's wool carders are available in two gauges of carding cloth: 72 points per square inch (an all-purpose carding cloth), and 112 points per square inch (great for fine wool and downy fibers). All carders are available with curved or straight backs.
Their cotton carders are wider than their wool carders and are also available with curved or straight-backed paddles. With 208 points per square inch,
the cotton cards are excellent for cotton and other short fibers.
Strauch Handcards A full compliment of hand cards are offered. Pictures of the curved wood pad series are shown; this same series of hand cards are also available in the flat wood style.
They are made entirely of light-weight poplar wood.
As to handle design, when you close your hand, notice that your fingers and palm form a cylinder. Having straight handles makes each pair comfortable and easy to use.
All hand cards are sealed with Tung Oil and need only to be occasionally cleaned with a high quality liquid lemon oil furniture polish.

Riser Brush Think of it as the “finger-sized flicker” for your
wool locks! A small, fine, soft wire brush which is held between 2
fingers or on a finger. Originally used to fluff up yarn - specifically
designed to fluff Bunka Cord for embroidery - we find it works great as a
lock flicker and for cleaning handcards. $3.50 #169098
This new, improved model has two ratios for even more flexibility and control when carding and blending:
Use the 6:1 ratio to prepare your fleece. The controlled intake and carding will produce a smooth even batt ready for blending, spinning or felting.
Use the 4:1 ratio to blend sliver, colours and different fiber types consistently into an open and airy batt.
The new carder retains the adjustable drum clearance - allows you to set the teeth distance for total control of your
fiber. All nylon bearings ensure it is light and easy to turn. The card cloth has wire teeth with a special protective coating and a flexible rubber backing for long life. The carder is strong and robust with the body made from Silver Beech hardwood. The carder has rubber feet to prevent it slipping. Card
2 oz batts quickly and efficiently. Batt size 22 inches x 9 inches. It comes assembled and lacquered, ready to use. Awl/doffer, 2 clamps and carding instructions are included.
Weighs only 11 lb.
Choose either model:
Coarse 36 point for stronger wools or fiber with more vegetable matter to remove
OR
Fine 72 point for finer wools & exotic fibers.
1/2" teeth, 10" x 8" drum, available in two
carding cloths. Comes with table clamps, doffer brush, doffer pin and
instructions. Shipping weight: 17 lbs.
The batts produced on this 4” wide carder weigh as much as
the batts produced on a traditional full size carder. The 1/2” teeth and the10"
diameter of the drum make this possible.
The carder gets its name from the 4” wide roving-like batts it produces. The
drum size is 10” x 4” wide. The fine cloth has 46 teeth./sq inch. Otherwise
identical to the drum carder, this instrument is a powerful tool for all
spinners and felters alike. Weight: 13 lb.
Has the same specifications as the Louet Standard drumcarder
with fine carding cloth (46 teeth./sq inch). 110 volts, 3/4 horse power motor. Some
assembly required, as the motor and carder are shipped separately. Comes
with assembly instructions, doffer brush, doffer pin and wrench.
Strauch Petite Drum Carder
The Petite is a manual drum carder with a polyurethane drive belt. This carder
is part of Strauch's product line specifically for fiber artists who have budget
or space considerations but want Strauch quality.
The Petite is an excellent choice for a mid-sized carder with full-sized
features. The Petite is slightly smaller (6˝" wide drums) than the
standard chain drive (-3/4" wide) models. As with the chain drive models,
the 05 fine cloth on the large drum and "Slicker-Licker" on the small
drum is standard.
Unique to this carder is that it is available in kit form as well as fully
assembled. Kit comes with everything you need. A word of caution, however, being
a belt drive carder, it is designed for the occasional user. If you plan to do a
lot of fiber processing, consider the durability of the chain drive series.
Strauch Petite Kit
Special tools included with each Petite (both kit and assembled) are:
* The popular Knuckle-Saving-Batt-Pick, an invaluable tool for removing the batt
without damage to the equipment or the user.
* Doffer/Cleaner Brush to thoroughly and easily clean any residual fibers from
the carding drum.
* A small cleaner/dabber brush for use on the licker drum.
* Table clamps to secure the carder to the work surface.
The fabulous Brush Attachment is available separately and can be installed at
time of purchase or be added later.
