for lively children is a real head-scratcher. Crochet patterns include unusual

as, elaborate patterns for macramé. ISBN: 1-883010-82-9. 9" x

WELDON'S
PRACTICAL NEEDLEWORK, VOL. 4, from Piecework Magazine. In addition to the knitted and crocheted heirloom treasures found in
all the Weldon’s volumes, this one introduces both tatting (edgings and
doilies galore) and beadwork. The latter includes embroidery techniques,
smocking, netted edgings, unusual trims, wire flowers, knitting, buttons, and a
mosaic weaving technique worked with the aid of a cardboard device that
doesn’t appear in contemporary bead literature. The “Practical Stocking
Knitter” chapter is a primer of heel and toe techniques, and includes a method
for replacing worn sock heels. ISBN: 1-883010-94-2. Hardbound,
9" x 12". $30.00 #239004
WELDON'S NEEDLEWORK BOOK 5,
from Piecework Magazine. Lovely, delicate crocheted edgings, extensive designs for Mountmellick
embroidery (a sturdy, handsome white-on-white work), tasteful hemstitchings and
drawnwork, and some innovative knitted seed-bead trims can be found in this
volume. But there are also patterns that explain why women then were prone to
fainting spells and hysteria; a barrister’s wig in puff knitting; knitted
undersleeves, shoe covers, and dickeys; an alarming Bulgarian headdress; a bag
for holding lemons, a billiard pocket, and (believe it or not) ear caps for
horses. ISBN: 1-883010-95-0. Hardbound, 9" x 12". $30.00 #239005
WELDON'S NEEDLEWORK BOOK 6,

WELDON'S NEEDLEWORK BOOK 7,
from Piecework Magazine. The “practical” knick-knacks you can make from crepe
paper—lampshades, flowerpot covers, holders for their feather dusters—are
truly astonishing. As with the previous volumes, this one includes numerous
projects to knit and crochet, and many are indeed fanciful such as an adorable
“Baby’s Glove in Brioche Knitting,” a sweet toy lamb to crochet, and a
little vest knitted in one long piece and folded like origami. Ecclesiastical
embroidery is presented, as well as exotic Japanese-inspired bead and bamboo
curtains. ISBN: 1-931499-18-7. Hardbound, 9" x 12". $30.00 #239007
WELDON'S
PRACTICAL NEEDLEWORK, VOL. 8, from Piecework Magazine.
This
volume offers instructions for working monograms into your stockings and gloves,
and features knitting patterns primarily for babies, toddlers, and their dolls.
Introduced for the first time in the series are Bulgarian and Hungarian
embroidery styles worked in satin and buttonhole stitches that produce stylized
floral motifs common to each ethnic needlework tradition. The crochet sections
feature caps, capes, and booties, and several lace borders for embellishing
linens. And for readers who enjoyed the techniques of church decorations,
Mountmellick embroidery, and crêpe paper presented in Volume 7, you’ll find
more of them in Volume 8. ISBN: 1-931499-29-2. Hardbound, 9" x 12",
152 pages, 250 original line drawings from the 1800s. $30.00 #239031
WELDON'S
PRACTICAL NEEDLEWORK, VOL. 9, from Piecework Magazine.Monograms and initials as well as plain needlework all make their first
series appearances in this volume. The section on monograms and initials covers
techniques for appliqué, embroidery, and cross-stitch, and provides two full
cross-stitch alphabets for monogramming. The plain needlework section includes
sewing buttons and buttonholes, hemming, piping, pleating, fancy lettering, and
a variety of stitch variations. For crocheters the book features doll clothes,
bedspreads, and shawls and jackets for ladies, and for knitters there are a
number of garments for children including gloves, hoods, baby booties and
stockings. More fascinating displays of Mountmellick embroidery complete this
volume along with some intriguing crêpe paper projects. Hardbound, 9 x

appliqué embroidery; lots of crocheted edgings, insertions, and even baby
rattles; hairpin-crochet edgings; a wide array of knitting—from a really cool
knitted tassel to adorable booties for baby; an entire section on pincushions

on beginning point lace and beginning ribbon plaiting; and last but not least,
“practical leather work.” This volume is a cornucopia of ideas! Hardbound, 9 x 12, 152 pages, over 200 black and white

WELDON'S
PRACTICAL NEEDLEWORK, VOL. 11, from Piecework Magazine.
Okay, most of us are not going to attempt the bent iron work that opens this
volume of Weldon's in spite of the editor's statement that "bent iron, as
opposed to wrought iron, is admirably adapted for amateur skill..."! But
just turn a few pages and you'll find an amazing variety of fun things to
create, including more than 140 projects to crochet or knit. Some of the knitted
socks in this volume are spectacular—nothing Victorian about them! The man's
crocheted vest worked in moss stitch is fashion-runway worthy. The beaded
archway curtain is fabulous as are the torch on lace trimmings and the point
lace collars. The bent iron work notwithstanding, this volume will bring hours
of enjoyment. Hardbound, 9 x 12, 152 pages, more than 200 black-and-white
illustrations, ISBN 1-931499-49-7. $30.00 #239137

beautiful white-on-white Mountmellick embroidery, drawn-thread work, and
smocking is also included. Hardbound, 9 x 12, 152 pages, more than 200
black-and-white illustrations, ISBN 1-931499-78-0. $30.00 #239138
