ART
AND CRAFT OF HANDMADE PAPER, Vance Studley. Papermaking is one of the most automated manufacturing
processes. Forests go in at one end and huge rolls of paper of every description
emerge at the other. Why would anyone want to reverse this process and go back
to making paper by hand? If you have even seen any handmade paper, you'll
already know the answer. You can make absolutely beautiful papers by hand,
unlike those you have ever seen before. I once was in a stationers and saw some
handmade Japanese paper. I immediately bought an assortment of sheets just to
show them to my wife. The author opens his book with a history of papermaking
and then takes you step-by-step through the papermaking process. 112 pages, 151
illustrations. Softcover, $10.95 #139007

PAPERMAKING FOR BASKETRY AND OTHER CRAFTS, Edited by Lynn Stearns. It seems to be a strange combination - paper and
basketry. Not surprisingly, then, sometimes it works and sometimes it
doesn't. Here you can read of 16 artists who combine paper and basketry,
learn the techniques they use, and see the results of their efforts, many of
which are quite attractive. The book contains very valuable information
about plants which can be used for papermaking. I think this would be good

interested in combining paper with basketry. Illustrated. 160 pages.
