Ikat IIIKAT II: Ikat with Warp, Weft, Double, & Compound Weaving, Shifu, Hand & Machine Knitting, Lydia Van Gelder.
It's back, it's bigger, and it's even better! This is a revised and expanded edition of Van Gelder's out-of-print classic 1980 text, "Ikat." Added chapters cover "shifu" (Japanese paper spinning and weaving), ikat for knitting, and a Sumba warp-ikat technique for creating mirror images. Included with each ikat technique is a project with specific instructions for the reader to try. The larger format of the redesigned layout adds to the book, and high-quality paper makes diagrams and photos (some new contemporary pieces are added) clearer than in the earlier edition. This is a must for any would-be resist dyer, and an important reference for those who have tried the techniques. 50 color pages. ISBN-10: 0962558656. Softcover 8½" x 11." $34.95  #139475

This is a basic textbook, reference book, and a new "old friend" for narrow band weavers.  ISBN-10: 0960085424.  314 pages.  6¾" x 9¾" hardcover. $35.00  #139353

THE MUMMIES OF URUMCHITHE MUMMIES OF URUMCHI, Elizabeth Wayland Barber
The mystery presented in this book will tantalize and haunt everyone who turns its pages. In 2000 B.C., five hundred years before Tutankhamen ruled in Egypt, corpses were buried in Western China. Preserved by the very dry conditions, these mummies appear to be "Caucasian." The artifacts present an even greater mystery: textiles in vivid colors (especially red and turquoise-blue), twill plaids, felted hats, hats constructed in nalbinding, 5-color kumihimo braids, plaited and plain-weave bands, and tapestries with elaborate spiral and lightning designs. The author takes you on her quest to find out where these people came from in language and logic that will engage your interest as irresistibly as any thriller. Black and white illustrations and 16 color plates.  ISBN-10: 0393320197.  7'' x 9¼'' softcover.  $18.95  #139459

On WeavingON WEAVING, Anni Albers.
This treatise on weaving by the greatest weaver to come out of the Bauhaus continues to inspire our efforts through this full reprint. A weaver/artist with an international reputation, Ms Albers first presented this study of weaving in 1963. Her discussion ranges all over the world, looking at many styles of weaving looms, different structures, fibers, and design sources. Although her main oeuvre was art weaving, her interest in weaving lore and handwoven fabric are evident in her writing and the accompanying illustrations, weave pattern diagrams, and historic photos. The title of this classic reprint would indicate it's an academic treatise of some sort. It's much more.
ISBN: 0486431924 8 1/2" x 11" softcover. 204 pages.  $19.95  #139275

Park WeavesPARK WEAVES: Based on Dr. William G. Bateman's Manuscript — Shuttle Craft Monograph 37, Virginia Harvey (Editor).
In this collection, the pattern weft thread is tied down in regular intervals. The great value of this book to me is in understanding how Dr. Bateman manipulates the few numbers he works with (just 8) to get as great a variety as he does. Illustrated.  ISBN-10: 0916658392.  8" x 10½" softcover.  $14.95  #139540

Pictorial Weavings of the NavajoPICTORIAL WEAVINGS OF THE NAVAJO, Nancy N. Schiffer.
Though early Navajo weaving rarely contained pictorial representations of recognizable objects, this situation has been changing dramatically as we enter the 1990s. That is hardly surprising since any art tends to change with the times - some lead, others follow. This book presents you with a fascinating collection of such pictorial weaving, most - but certainly not all, woven in the last 40 years. They still the "look" of Navajo weaving, but they are certainly different from the designs we are used to. This is not a "how-to" book, but one to show you the direction in which Navajo weaving is going today. 64 pages, over 200 color photographs.  ISBN-10: 0887403182.  64 pages.  $12.95  #139487

Point Twill With Color-And-WeavePOINT TWILL WITH COLOR-AND-WEAVE, Margaret B. Windeknecht.
Here's a careful, detailed study of point twills, a step at a time. Concepts are built up and extended. It starts with simple point twills and extended point twills on 4 harnesses and goes on to 8, 12, and 16 harness point twills and point twill blocks. Several different tie-ups are explored with the same draft showing you the way to unending variations. Almost as a bonus, color and weave effects are introduced. Fascinating effects can be achieved in this way -- and the door is opened for you for further explorations. Illustrated.  ISBN: 0961879718.  76 pages, 8½" x 11" softcover, $13.95  #139072  Out of print - limited to stock on hand.
