Swifts

A swift is used to hold a skein of yarn. You simply unfold the skein, slip it over the swift and push the swift open.  It unwinds as you make balls or measure a warp.

McMorran Yarn Balance

McMorran Yarn Balance

Take a length of yarn and place centrally in the V of the balance arm.  Add more yarn or cut off yarn ends until the balance arm is horizontal.  Remove yarn and measure.  Measure TOTAL length in inches.  Multiply number of inches (& fractions) by 100.  This figure is the approximate number of yards in a pound of yarn.  Note: The accuracy will increase if equal amounts of yarn are at each side of the V.  The figure is approximate only, and the balance must not be used for legal sale of yarns.

Designed by H. McMorran, B.Sc.
Former lecturer in Textile Testing at the Scottish College of Textiles, Galashiels, Scotland

Approximately six inches tall and two inches wide when packed into itself, for travel or storage.  $23.30  #349020

Strauch Ballwinder

Strauch Jumbo Ballwinder

This winder makes a very large center-pull ball. One-pound balls can be made!
The newly designed Strauch Jumbo Ball Winder uses a ball bearing drive. No oiling or adjusting is needed. A longer counter weight bracket greatly reduces vibration. In addition, the longer 15" base eliminates "knuckle-smacking" while winding.
The extra long length table clamp allows the winder it to be clamped to a standard 1˝ inch kitchen counter. For those who use a table that does not have a front drop down piece of wood (like you find on a typical dining room table), the clamp can reach further under the table to prevent any wobbling or "flapping" of the ball winder base. This is a change from the original shorter clamp.
Each jumbo ball winder is tested to make sure it forms a perfect ball every time. That's why you'll find a small test ball on each and every winder.

How It Works - This unit generates a unique and distinctive diamond-shaped patterned ball as a result of its complex rotation. Two things must happen at the same time in order to wind a perfect ball. The whole drive wheel assembly must rotate as the crank is turned and it must also smoothly revolve on the clear plastic drive cone. Because of this off-center rotation, the ball winder must be clamped to a work surface. It is important not to wind the ball too fast. Doing so will distort the red bracket supporting the yarn cylinder causing it to slip on the plastic cone.
Your jumbo ball winder is shipped in a handy storage box. -- Save it.  It’s a handy carrying case and folds flat for easy storage.
Dimensions of unit: 15" L x 5" W x 9˝" H. Shipping weight 6 pounds.
Price: $115.00

Spinner's Control Card

Knitters can also use this gauge to determine the thickness of manufactured yarns!

Now spin your singles in the exact diameter needed for any designated ply, without stopping to make a control yarn!

To use, simply determine the wraps per inch (wpi) that you want your finished yarn to be and multiply the wpi by the number of ply you want. The result is the thickness that you will need to spin each single. Use the Control Card as a visual aid to spin each single the exact thickness required for your finished, plied yarn!
